Welcome to the Summer Newsletter 2013

I must apologize if this newsletter is a little late this year, but with the Flower and Produce Show at the start of September i did want to include a little about it, another year of great success i must say. More entries were exhibited this year and the competition was a lot tougher in some of the categories but it was lovely to see more entrants and ideas, I’m sure next year will be an even bigger success. For more information on the Produce Show see the Produce Show 2013 page.
Moreover, at the allotment this summer seems to have been a longer season, I'm sure many of us are still reaping the rewards of fruit and vegetables, but i fear winter (or at least autumn) is upon us as the cooler mornings and darker nights draw in. Now is a good time to think about sowing winter varieties and early spring sowing, as well as taking any late cuttings or collecting seed. Of course the tedious task of digging  is upon us all. Remember not to dig when its too wet, but it is beneficial to get started before the wet weather sets in, plus i find digging the soil so it can get the frost really helps the break down of composition considering Hill Rise has quite claggy, clay soil. However, if you did dig the plot last year, do consider liming this year and alternate as you go, raising the pH will improve the root system of next years plants.

Searching for manure?
If you are in need of manure, a local farmer popped by my allotment the other day to offer free manure, he is the first bungalow on the left along Wyton (RAF Wyton straight), this is complete horse manure and good quality so if you have transport and are prepared to get your car boot a little dirty it may be for you.
This is the time of year the HRAA Committee and St.Ives Gardening Club renew membership, if you are not a member of would like to become one please visit the websites.
